Many rushed to contact loved ones traveling on this highway. Among them were relatives of an elderly couple who had just arrived from Switzerland to spend Easter in their village near Servia, Kozani. The 72-year-old Kostas Tziona and his 69-year-old wife Maria rented a car in Thessaloniki and were heading to their village when disaster struck near the Polymylos junction. A truck collided with their vehicle, which then hit another car, causing all three vehicles to catch fire. The elderly couple tragically lost their lives, while a 34-year-old driver was injured. Visibility was severely impaired due to dense fog, creating apocalyptic scenes as vehicles burned. Relatives recounted how they tried reaching the couple by phone, only to later learn of the tragedy through authorities. The brother of the deceased man said, “They came from Switzerland yesterday,” highlighting the heartbreak of losing loved ones after such a short reunion.
