A somber announcement from the Vostanion General Hospital of Mytilene has confirmed the sudden death of a 36-year-old physician four days after giving birth — a case that has deeply shaken the island of Lesvos. The hospital issued the statement on Wednesday, 24 June 2026.
Details of the Case
According to the hospital’s statement, Dr. M.P., a first-time mother, delivered a healthy baby girl via spontaneous (non-interventional) vaginal birth at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, 19 June 2026 — in her 39th week of pregnancy. In the following days, she developed complications and was admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) early Monday, 22 June. She was then transferred on Tuesday, 23 June, to Attikon University General Hospital in Athens for advanced care.
Hospital Response and Investigation Underway
“We are profoundly devastated by this loss — the obstetrics and gynecology team, as well as all medical, nursing, and support staff at Mytilene General Hospital,” the statement reads. “The hospital has already initiated the prescribed procedures to investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.”
The exact cause of death remains pending final forensic findings. “The precise cause will be clarified upon completion of the autopsy and other required examinations,” the hospital added.
The statement concludes with condolences: “The Hospital Administration, Medical Services, and the entire medical, nursing, and support staff extend their deepest and most sincere sympathies to the deceased doctor’s family and loved ones.”
