In a scene reminiscent of a war zone, authorities are working tirelessly to identify the two victims of a devastating accident on the Egnatia Odos highway during the afternoon of Holy Tuesday. Despite the severe charring of the bodies, officials are focusing on the vehicle to determine their identities. According to local media, the victims were a couple residing permanently in Switzerland. Reports indicate that the driver, a 73-year-old man originally from the Cambounia region, and his 68-year-old wife from Livadero, had rented the car involved in the tragedy. They had traveled to Greece to celebrate Easter in their hometown. The accident reportedly began when a vehicle mistakenly entered the e-pass lane at a toll booth, prompting the driver to reverse into another lane. A truck then collided with the reversing vehicle, trapping all involved in a fiery inferno amidst heavy fog. While occupants of the first vehicle escaped unharmed, the unfortunate couple perished inside their burning car. The Ukrainian truck driver was arrested but tested negative for alcohol. Authorities are investigating whether excessive speed contributed to the catastrophe. Following the incident, traffic delays stretched for dozens of kilometers as drivers waited up to four hours. In an interview with newsit.gr, the couple’s daughter recounted how her parents, who managed to survive with minor injuries, were struck by the vehicle behind them after stopping due to the initial collision.
