Tragedy in Kastoria: Elderly Man Self-Immolates in His Yard – Bystander Tries to Save Him

A tragic incident unfolded in Kranochori, Kastoria, as an elderly man decided to end his life by setting himself on fire. On Saturday morning (15/03/2025), the man poured flammable liquid over his body and set himself alight while in the yard of his home in the Kranochori area. A local resident discovered the self-immolator engulfed in flames and rushed to help him, simultaneously alerting the authorities. The individual, who works at Kastoria Hospital, attempted to extinguish the flames by throwing his coat over the elderly man but unfortunately was unable to save him. The victim was transferred with severe burns to Kastoria General Hospital, where doctors, due to the severity of his condition, decided to airlift him to Papageorgiou Hospital in Thessaloniki. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries. The reasons behind the unfortunate man’s drastic action remain unknown as of now.
