A tragic incident occurred on Saturday morning at the Malevizi Shooting Range near Heraklion, on the island of Crete. A young woman, originally from Thessaloniki, died after turning a firearm on herself during a shooting session.
According to EKAB emergency responders, the woman had been handed a weapon to take part in target practice. Moments before the incident, she reportedly told the range supervisor: “Step further back—you’re making me anxious.” She then immediately turned the gun toward herself and fired.
The shot caused a severe neck wound and resulted in massive, uncontrolled bleeding. Upon arrival of the ambulance, she was still conscious and responsive, but her condition was assessed as extremely critical. She was rushed urgently to Venizelio Hospital in Heraklion, where she later died.
Greek police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are focusing on whether the woman was a licensed sport shooter with official authorization to handle firearms—or simply a civilian visitor, for whom weapon use would not have been permitted. The exact conditions under which the firearm was provided remain unclear, and authorities are working to clarify procedural compliance and oversight at the facility.
