Tragedy in Andros: ‘The car was half-submerged and the 67-year-old woman screamed for help’, says eyewitness

The local community of Andros is shocked by the tragic accident that occurred on Friday afternoon (09.05.2025) in the Batsi area when a 67-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle, plunging into the sea, resulting in her death. The unfortunate incident happened near the “Heroes” monument where the car breached protective barriers and ended up on the rocks and in the sea under unclear circumstances. An eyewitness described the harrowing experience to newsit.gr, recounting the horrifying moments they witnessed. “We lived through something very tragic; I’ll never forget it,” the witness said. “After the incident, the unfortunate woman was submerged halfway in the water and was screaming for help. We tried to communicate with her. She managed to get out of the car but got trapped by its rear end due to the current.” This situation lasted about 25 minutes. “The woman had swallowed a lot of water but was still conscious. Two men dived in, pulled her onto the rocks while she was still conscious, and performed CPR, but unfortunately, she didn’t make it. She had ingested too much water. However, the harbor authorities arrived too late,” the witness concluded. The mayor of Andros, Theodosios Sousoudis, also gave a shocking account to newsit.gr. “Unfortunately, the woman fell from an unusual spot and when they pulled her out with the car, she was already dead. The incident occurred in the Batsi area. She veered off at a point where there’s no road, somehow breaking through the barrier and ending up below where there’s both sea and rocks near the ‘Heroes’ monument. The woman was from the island and was around 67 years old.” The woman was airlifted without consciousness and transferred by EKAB ambulance to the Agricultural Clinic of Batsi, where her death was confirmed. Authorities are investigating the exact conditions of the accident, while questions have begun to arise regarding the response time of responsible services.
