A nine-year-old girl drowned in Italy’s Lake Como after being swept away by a strong current while swimming with her cousins. Her body was recovered late on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, ending a harrowing search operation that lasted several hours.
Incident Near the Volta Temple
The tragedy unfolded around 3 p.m. near the Giardini a lago area, directly in front of the Temple of Volta in Como — a popular lakeside spot that draws hundreds of swimmers each year, despite prominent warning signs prohibiting bathing.
The child, who had traveled to Italy from Morocco for summer holidays with relatives, was reportedly just a few meters from shore when she was suddenly pulled under. Neither her cousins, who were playing with her in the water, nor adults watching from the shore noticed what happened in time.
Challenging Terrain and Past Incidents
The lakebed in that section slopes gently for several meters before dropping sharply — a known hazard cited by Italy’s Corriere della Sera as having contributed to previous drownings.
Italian authorities launched an extensive rescue effort involving police and fire department vessels, specialized river rescue teams, divers, two helicopters, and multiple ambulances. The operation concluded late that evening, when divers located and retrieved the girl’s body.
The family has lived in the Monza province for years; they had recently reunited with aunts, uncles, and cousins before heading to the lake.
