Trade can serve as a cornerstone for boosting outward orientation and strengthening local economies across Greece’s islands—leveraging tourism, local products, and infrastructure, said Stavros Kafounis, President of the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (ESEE).

Overcoming Island Challenges

Kafounis emphasized that despite persistent challenges linked to insularity—including higher transport costs, limited market access, small-scale local economies, and pronounced seasonality—trade remains one of the most vital engines of prosperity and growth for island communities.

Tourism and Commerce: A Strategic Alliance

He highlighted the close interdependence between trade and tourism, noting that millions of visitors each year engage directly with goods and services from Greek islands—significantly reinforcing local economies and expanding their international reach. ‘Every commercial enterprise is potentially an export-oriented business—especially when operating in an island region with strong cultural identity and distinctive products,’ he stated.

Promoting Authentic Local Products

Kafounis underscored the need for systematic promotion of regional products—from olive oil, honey, and cheese to wines, seafood, and processed goods—positioning them as authentic ambassadors of Greek tradition and culture on global markets.

Infrastructure and Connectivity

He also pointed out that commercial needs act as a powerful catalyst for investment in port and transport infrastructure, modern warehousing facilities, and digital networks—enhancing island connectivity and improving residents’ quality of life.

Strategic Initiatives

Within this framework, ESEE has prioritized the adoption of new technologies and the enhancement of transport networks. It is also actively promoting ‘shopping tourism’ and initiatives such as Shopping in Greece and Shopping Made in Greece, aiming to establish Greece as an internationally recognized shopping destination.

In closing, Kafounis remarked: ‘With planning, vision, and collaboration, trade can continue to be a driving force for progress, prosperity, and international engagement in island Greece—generating significant multiplier benefits for local communities and the national economy.’
