A tourist was swept away by an avalanche in northern Norway and survived after being trapped for nearly seven hours under the snow. According to Norwegian media, this is a rare case of survival after such an extended period. The man, aged between 40 and 50, was located conscious at a depth of approximately 1.5 meters within the snow near the municipality of Lingen shortly after midnight. After being caught in the avalanche, he managed to call the police from inside an air pocket. “It’s astonishing that he’s still alive,” said rescuer Christian Midgard to TV2, who found him with his dog Whisky. “All statistical data and experience suggest this isn’t possible when someone remains buried for so long,” he added. The mayor of Lingen, Erik Larsen, described it as “a miracle.” An expert from the University of Tromsø stated, “People who survive avalanches can suffocate within ten minutes. Some survive longer, but seven hours is almost unprecedented in history.” The man was part of a group of three foreign tourists skiing in an area where authorities had warned of high avalanche risk. Another member of the trio ended up in a fjord’s waters but managed to reach safety and alert authorities. Searches continue for a missing woman. The tourists’ nationality has not been disclosed.
