Greek travelers are showing strong intent to travel ahead of the upcoming Pentecost weekend (29 May–1 June 2026), with Booking.com reporting a 21% year-on-year increase in search activity for that period. The data reflects searches made by users in Greece between 4–11 April 2026 for stays with check-in dates falling within the three-day holiday.
Domestic Tourism Leads the Charge
Domestic tourism is proving especially dynamic: searches for destinations within Greece rose by 33% compared to last year. Athens remains the top choice among Greek travelers—holding first place despite a slight 5% dip in searches from 2025. Thessaloniki follows closely in fourth place, with searches up 33%.
Nauplio Emerges as Fastest-Growing Destination
Nauplio stands out as the fastest-growing destination among the top ten, jumping to eighth place with a striking 115% annual increase in searches. This surge reflects a broader trend toward shorter, more accessible getaways within Greece—favoring proximity, flexibility, and ease of travel.
Chania also features in the top ten, with a 13% rise in searches—reinforcing Crete’s enduring appeal for quick domestic escapes.
International Preferences Shift Slightly
Rome and Paris remain firm favorites among Greek travelers, ranking second and third respectively—even with marginal declines of 3% and 2%. Budapest has emerged as one of the strongest international contenders, climbing with a 43% jump in searches. Istanbul, ranked seventh, posted the same growth rate (43%), while Milan—ranked sixth—saw a more modest but steady 7% increase.
Barcelona, though still in the top ten, recorded the largest drop: searches fell by 35% compared to last year.
