Greece’s tourism sector recorded growth in both arrivals (up 2.8%) and overnight stays (up 2.2%) in 2025 across hotel-type accommodations, campsites, and short-term collective lodging—such as rented rooms—according to data from Greece’s Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).
Foreign and Domestic Visitors Both Rise
Compared to 2024, arrivals and overnight stays by foreign nationals increased by 2.9% and 2.2%, respectively. Domestic arrivals rose by 2.4%, while overnight stays by Greek residents grew by 2.1%.
Occupancy and Accommodation Distribution
Overall bed occupancy in hotels—excluding campsites and collective short-term accommodations—stood at 50.7% in 2025, up slightly from 50.6% the previous year.
Hotel-type accommodations accounted for the largest share of activity: 79.1% of total arrivals and 76.1% of all overnight stays.
Seasonal Concentration
More than half of annual arrivals—and over 60% of overnight stays—occurred during the peak summer-to-autumn period. Specifically, July through October accounted for 56.7% of arrivals and 63.7% of overnight stays across all accommodation types.
Regional Highlights
By region, the largest absolute increases in arrivals were seen in:
- Peloponnese: +6.8% in arrivals, +6.5% in overnight stays
- Central Macedonia: +4.5% in arrivals, +3.3% in overnight stays
- Ionian Islands: +3.8% in arrivals, though overnight stays dipped by 0.8%
International Visitors Dominate
Foreign visitors made up the vast majority of tourism activity in 2025: 73.8% of all arrivals and 83.8% of all overnight stays.
Of those international visitors, the overwhelming majority came from Europe—80.6% of arrivals and 89% of overnight stays. Within Europe, EU member states contributed most significantly: 53% of arrivals and 58.1% of overnight stays.
Top EU Source Countries
Germany led as the top EU source market, accounting for 12.7% of arrivals and 16% of overnight stays. France followed with 6.5% of arrivals and 5.7% of overnight stays.
Other European Markets
The United Kingdom was the leading non-EU European source, contributing 16.4% of arrivals and 19.4% of overnight stays.
Year-on-Year Growth by Origin
Among EU countries, the largest absolute increases in arrivals compared to 2024 came from:
- Bulgaria: +8.4% in arrivals, +11.5% in overnight stays
- Germany: +1.8% in arrivals, +0.3% in overnight stays
- Sweden: +4% in arrivals, though overnight stays fell by 1.6%
Outside the EU, notable growth came from:
- United Kingdom: +5.7% in arrivals, +5.8% in overnight stays
- Serbia: +11.4% in arrivals, +7% in overnight stays
- Turkey: +4.8% in arrivals, +2.4% in overnight stays
