Tonga Islands: Tsunami Warning Lifted After 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake

in

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has rescinded the tsunami warning following a 7.0-magnitude earthquake that occurred today (March 30, 2025), off the coast of the Tonga Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The quake had a shallow focal depth, with its epicenter located approximately 80 kilometers southeast of Pangai village on the Tonga Islands. Initially, the US Tsunami Warning System considered the possibility of dangerous waves reaching up to one meter within a 300-kilometer radius of the epicenter. However, based on all available data, they concluded that no tsunami would form due to this seismic event. Meanwhile, Tonga’s national disaster management office advised residents not to approach the shorelines and urged those living in low-lying areas to move inland. Earthquakes are common in Tonga, an archipelago of about 100,000 inhabitants situated along the so-called ‘Ring of Fire’ of the Pacific.
