The gold watch given to the captain of “Carpathians” who saved 700 passengers from him was sold for a record amount, two million dollars in auction. The gold pocket watch was held by Arthur Rostron, captain of the ship “Carpathia”, as an award for rescuing more than 700 wreckers after sinking the Titanic, in 1912. The 18-carat Tiffany watch gave Rostron in memory of her husband, the widow of John Jacob Astor, the richest man of the time, who died in the most famous wreck. Titanic hit an iceberg and sank into the northern Atlantic ocean, on its maiden voyage in 1912. Arthur Rostron was awarded the Gold Medal of the U.S. Congress by President William Howard Taft and was later knighted by King George III of Great Britain. “Karpathia” sailed from New York to the Mediterranean Sea when a radio operator heard a distress call from the Titanic in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912. He immediately alerted the captain, Arthur Rostron, who then turned the ship and headed with full power to the Titanic, sailing among icebergs. By the time it arrived, “Carpathia”, the Titanic had sunk and more than 1,500 people had died. However, the crew found 20 lifeboats full of survivors, saved more than 700 passengers and safely transported them to New York City.
