A man was found dead in an advanced state of decomposition inside an apartment in Athens’ Pagkrati neighborhood on Sunday, July 5, 2026. His brother — the only other person present in the unit — was found alive but disoriented and has since been taken into custody for questioning.
Call Triggered by Strong Odor
According to initial reports, police were alerted after neighbors reported a strong, suspicious odor emanating from the apartment on Astydamanos Street. The two brothers reportedly lived together and were known to suffer from serious psychological conditions.
Scene Details
Upon entering the apartment, officers discovered a body wrapped in a sheet and in an advanced stage of decomposition. Also present was a 63-year-old man — the deceased’s brother — who appeared confused and unresponsive. He was immediately taken to the local police station for examination.
Authorities have not yet determined whether the death resulted from criminal action or natural, pathological causes. A forensic autopsy is underway to establish the exact cause of death.
