Three suggestions for a Sunday break in Attica! Where to go, what to see…

Think about how you spend this Sunday? We have the perfect suggestions for a break from the city centre.

The Lake of Marathon
Bring the bikes, or even your sports shoes, and follow the paths on the shores, to enjoy the splendor of the lake from angles that few have considered. Detailed instructions to make the round of the lake by bike, but also a very detailed GPS map, you will find the PlanetBike.gr. If you are lucky, or dedicated birdwatchers with binoculars and all the associated equipment, surely you will succeed, and one of the hundreds of permanent or occasional residents of the lake hovering over the waters. See a nice tour around the lake here.

In Eleusis
The Eleusis is the closest thing to a city break has to offer Attica, while lovers of History have more reason to rejoice -we assume that you know why. One of the most beautiful archaeological sites of Attica: Impressively large, extremely well-preserved, and mystically atmospheric as befits a place that was home to the famous Eleusinian Mysteries. Works every day except Monday, from 8.00 until 15.00, and the ticket costs 3€. Details we have here and the Ministry of Culture here. Very nice for a walk is the coastal sea and the harbour of the city, but also the pedestrian streets with the warm περεΐστικα café in the centre.

In Porto Rafti
It is one of the most popular tourist resorts in Attica, a favourite destination of Μεσογειωτών but also of the Athenians, and even foreign who come here to enjoy sun, sea and fun, in a breathing distance from Athens. Porto Rafti, on the harbour with the weird name and the crystal blue waters, it was a few years ago a fishing village, with a handful of, αραιοχτισμένα houses and few inhabitants who lived off the fish of the Sea. It was, however, a matter of time to become the “bam” and start to built the first cottages, many of which later became permanent, and the settlement began to grow and to be featured on the first places among the most popular destinations of Attica – and not only.
Porto Rafti has beaches for all tastes: the municipal beach of Avlaki is fully organized, with plenty of shops around and recreational areas (restaurants and cafes). If you move to the left side of the bay of the harbor, you will reach the beach of St. Spiridon, while a little further is the probably most famous beach of the region, the Ερωτοσπηλιά, with the sandy beach and the caves.
In the summer in Porto Rafti are jammed by the thousands of visitors who don’t leave until they open the schools.
