A World War II-era naval mine was discovered off Epinomi beach, near Thessaloniki, at a depth of 28 meters — prompting an immediate security response. The device was found yesterday morning (June 22, 2026) during a routine inspection as part of the ongoing expansion project for the port’s 6th pier infrastructure.
Following the discovery, the Thessaloniki Port Authority notified the Hellenic Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, which assumed responsibility for assessing and handling the ordnance.
