A fire alarm was raised for two wildfires that broke out in the Koufalia area of Thessaloniki on the afternoon of Tuesday, 1 July 2026. The fires spread through low vegetation near the city, prompting an immediate response from the Hellenic Fire Service to contain the fronts and prevent further expansion.
Ground and aerial response
A total of 30 firefighters are engaged in the operation, supported by 11 vehicles, a foot patrol unit from the 2nd Mobile Emergency Response Unit (2nd EMODE), and volunteers. In addition, two firefighting aircraft and one helicopter are conducting repeated water drops to reinforce ground efforts.
Water tankers from the Central Macedonia Regional Authority are also assisting the operation. Firefighting teams are making every effort to bring both blazes under control as quickly as possible.
