Two fires broke out within a short time frame targeting vehicles belonging to New Democracy (ND) politicians in Thessaloniki, prompting investigations into possible arson.
First Incident: Eastern Thessaloniki
A fire erupted in a car parked in an open-air area outside a residence in eastern Thessaloniki. According to reports, the vehicle belonged to an ND councilwoman who sustained injuries along with her mother. No further details on the extent of their injuries have been released.
Second Incident: Early-Morning Fire in Apartment Building
The second fire occurred in the parking area (pylota) of a residential apartment building in Thessaloniki in the early hours of Wednesday, 1 July 2026. The vehicle involved belonged to a former ND MP.
Thick smoke from the blaze affected several residents. Five people suffered respiratory problems due to smoke inhalation; one sustained minor burns. All five were transported to hospital for medical evaluation and treatment, according to ERT News.
Five residents attempted to respond to the fire — among them, one was burned, while three others experienced breathing difficulties and required hospital care.
Damage and Investigation
Both vehicles were completely destroyed. Flames also spread to parts of the apartment building.
Authorities are treating both incidents as potential arson cases. A key point of interest is that the owners or residents involved in both cases appear to be linked to Greece’s political sphere.
The fires occurred around 5 a.m. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the two events are connected and to establish the exact causes.
