One person was convicted and two were acquitted on Friday, 19 June 2026, over a wildfire that broke out last week between Filuro and Peukoi in Thessaloniki, burning a total of 22 hectares of forest land.

Charges and Trial

Three men — members of a road reconstruction crew working in the area — were charged with negligent arson in connection with the Filuro fire. The blaze is believed to have started from sparks generated during the use of an angle grinder to cut a metal barrier.

Court Ruling

The Thessaloniki Misdemeanor Court sentenced the operator of the angle grinder to two months’ imprisonment, suspended. The court acquitted the other two defendants, including the project’s supervising engineer.

Response and Containment

Strong ground and aerial forces from the Hellenic Fire Service were deployed to extinguish the fire.
