Thessaloniki’s metro system will extend to the coastal suburb of Kalamaria this Thursday, 27 August 2026, with the official opening of the Kalamaria station. The new branch — comprising five stations: Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini, and Mikra — adds approximately 4.5 kilometers to the existing network and marks the completion of the metro’s current planned infrastructure.
A Unified Network
The Kalamaria extension will operate as an integrated part of the core metro line stretching from the New Railway Station to Nea Elvetia and the Pylaia Depot. This integration finalizes the urban rail network as originally designed, following successful technical inspections and certifications of infrastructure and operational systems. The formal licensing of the new branch — the last regulatory step before public handover — confirms full compliance with national safety and performance standards.
Operational Details
Trains will split their service between the two branches beyond 25th March Station: two out of every three departures will head toward Mikra, while one will continue to Nea Elvetia. Both branches will be managed through a single, centralized control system.
During peak commercial operation, headways on the shared central section — between the New Railway Station and 25th March Station — will be approximately three minutes. On the Kalamaria branch, average intervals between trains will be around 4.5 minutes.
The full journey from Mikra to the New Railway Station is expected to take between 24 and 26 minutes, depending on train routing decisions at the junction. As a result, travel time from Kalamaria to Thessaloniki’s city center will be under 20 minutes — significantly improving accessibility for tens of thousands of residents in eastern Thessaloniki.

Today, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas and Deputy Minister Nikos Tachiaos conducted an on-site inspection of the Kalamaria station, underscoring the government’s commitment to delivering modern, sustainable urban mobility. The extension represents a major milestone in Greece’s broader transport modernization agenda.
