A 49-year-old man was brought to the courthouse and is now facing criminal charges for an offense and two misdemeanors after shootings involving members of Europol. The case file has been handed over to the prosecutor of the First Instance Court of Thessaloniki, who initiated the criminal prosecution at the felony level. The 49-year-old Turkish national is accused of attempted murder, illegal firearm possession, and use of firearms. On Wednesday, he will return to the courthouse for a preliminary hearing by the examining magistrate of Thessaloniki, who is handling the entire case. According to ERT, his first words to police after being located and arrested were that he did not know he was being followed by Europol officers but believed they were members of a rival Turkish gang trying to kill him, which prompted him to open fire. He has been cooperative with authorities and on Saturday revealed where he had left the jeep he drove in Thermi. Regarding the other two Turkish criminals who remain at large, according to the suspect’s statement to police, they have likely crossed the border into Bulgaria. However, this information is still being verified by law enforcement.
