A 64-year-old man in Thessaloniki has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for multiple incidents of domestic violence against his 58-year-old deaf wife. The court imposed the full sentence without suspension or conversion to a fine, and he was immediately taken into custody.
Violent Incident Triggers Arrest
The incident that led to his arrest—and subsequent trial under the expedited ‘in flagrante’ procedure—took place in recent days. According to the victim’s testimony, she confronted her husband after noticing he was watching pornographic videos on his phone. As the couple are both deaf, the trial was conducted with the assistance of a sign language interpreter.
Victim’s Testimony Details Pattern of Abuse
Speaking through the interpreter, the 58-year-old woman stated: ‘This isn’t the first time. He has hit me many times. He drinks alcohol and torments me. He becomes violent.’ Regarding the most recent attack, she said: ‘He grabbed me by the hands and tried to strangle me. He kicked me. He beats me very often.’
Defendant Admits Limited Assault
During his testimony, the defendant admitted only to striking his wife on the arms and apologized for that act. He described the confrontation as stemming from a disagreement over a mobile video call, saying: ‘We had an argument. It got noisy.’
