A 60-year-old man has been remanded in custody after causing a fatal accident in Thessaloniki’s Lakada area on March 21, 2025. The victim was a 50-year-old woman. The suspect, who is still receiving treatment at the AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki, apologized to the examining judge today, Tuesday (April 1, 2025). In his defense, he stated, “I wish I were in her place. The headlights from the oncoming car blinded me, causing me to lose control and crash into her. I had two glasses of tsipouro but ate plenty afterward and waited long enough to metabolize it. I felt sober when driving. I’ve been in a detox program since 2006 and follow a methadone program at OKANA.” Following his apology, he was remanded in custody. Once his health condition allows him to be discharged from AHEPA, he will be transferred to the prison hospital where he will be held. Additionally, judicial authorities have accepted the request for a psychiatric evaluation.
