A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to 3.5 years in prison after throwing jars containing gasoline at the family home of his former partner in the Volvi municipality, on the outskirts of Thessaloniki. The Thessaloniki Misdemeanors Court convicted him under the expedited trial procedure for possession of incendiary materials and issuing threats against his ex-partner.
No Suspension of Sentence
The court ruled that the defendant’s appeal would not suspend enforcement of the sentence, meaning he must begin serving his prison term immediately.
Incident Details
According to the 46-year-old woman’s complaint, the incident occurred in Volvi — a suburban municipality east of Thessaloniki. She testified that the man drove past her parents’ house three times in one day and hurled jars toward her balcony. She said she immediately recognized the smell of gasoline — a claim corroborated by a police officer who testified before the court.
History of Threats
The woman recounted a pattern of intimidation during their relationship, stating the man repeatedly threatened her when she attempted to end it. She had previously sought legal protection, filing for restraining measures against him.
Defendant’s Defense
In his testimony, the 33-year-old claimed the jars contained fabric softener. When questioned about the police officer’s testimony regarding the gasoline odor, he conceded, “Perhaps one jar had traces of gasoline.” Asked why he threw the jars, he claimed he did so to pressure the woman into cleaning her balcony.
