A 30-year-old member of a drug trafficking ring, linked to the approximately 54 tons of cocaine seized in April at the Port of Piraeus, was arrested on Thursday (May 8, 2025). The value of the narcotics is estimated to be around 1.6 million euros. According to the statement by the Coast Guard Headquarters, the suspect was apprehended in the Kordelio area of Thessaloniki for his connection to the syndicate that smuggled the 54 tons of cocaine from Latin America into Piraeus. Searches were conducted at two houses, one in Kordelio and another in Platamon Pieria. Additionally, a vehicle associated with the case was seized and handed over under bail to the Thessaloniki Maritime Authority. Investigations continue to locate the remaining members of the drug ring. ‘Considering that cocaine smuggling from Latin America into the European market often involves retrieval from shipping containers by criminal organizations either working within or illegally accessing major ports, it is evident that this criminal organization operates internationally, focusing on the importation, storage, and further distribution of narcotics,’ concluded the Coast Guard Headquarters in their announcement.
