Thessaloniki: 24-Year-Old Sentenced to 4 Years for Assaulting Pregnant Wife

A 24-year-old man was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of assaulting his 22-year-old pregnant wife in Thessaloniki. The case reached the court following her complaint, filed while she was in her third month of pregnancy. The incident prompting the complaint occurred during an argument when he allegedly kicked her forcefully. In her testimony, the victim described two additional incidents of physical violence: one in December, where he struck her neck with a fist, and another earlier instance in which he threatened her with a knife. Addressing the court, she requested protection, stating, ‘I want us to be together, but I don’t want to be hurt again.’ The defendant, originally from Syria, denied all charges, claiming he loves his wife and is eagerly awaiting their child. Regarding the kicking incident, he claimed it was accidental—occurring when he bumped into her during an argument about her lost wallet. The court rejected his explanation and upheld the four-year sentence.
