The ‘dead watchers’ take center stage in David Cronenberg’s new thriller, ‘The Shrouds,’ set to release in North America following its Cannes Film Festival premiere last summer. Janus Films has released the first official trailer featuring stars Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Sandrine Holt, and recent Oscar nominee Guy Pearce. The director crafted another investigative story for his 23rd film-thriller after the passing of his wife, Carolyn, from cancer in 2017 at age 66. The trailer gives a first glimpse of performances by Cassel and Kruger. The plot follows an innovative entrepreneur who develops software allowing mourners to monitor the decomposition process of their loved ones in real-time. A vandal attack on graves, including that of his late wife, uncovers a unique, possibly geopolitical conspiracy involving his wife’s sister (Kruger), her ex-husband (Pearce), and international business affairs. Cronenberg expressed his interest in exploring paranoia as a strategic distress mechanism, noting how finding meaning in death through conspiracy theories can be comforting. ‘The Shrouds’ premieres in select Los Angeles and New York theaters on April 18 before its wide U.S. release on April 25.
