Exactly on the 150th anniversary of the birth of author Georges de la Fouchardiere, the theatrical adaptation of his renowned novel ‘La Chienne’ is making its debut. This paradoxical tale of desire, corruption, and crime unfolds in a decaying theater within a theater, satirizing its characters as they unsuspectingly navigate through a deceptive door and burn in the depths of punishment. The play critiques the eternal conflict between artistic value and voracious art dealers, the commodification of the human body, and society’s dependence on money. Through the perspectives of two narrators, the story follows Maurice, an ordinary clerk trapped in a conventional marriage, who falls in love with Lulu, a carefree nightclub dancer. As Maurice loses everything—his integrity, dignity, and even the paternity of his paintings—the play explores themes of betrayal, exploitation, and societal decay. Directed by Kerasia Samara, the production features original music by Takis Barbéris and stunning visuals by Eva Melá. ‘La Chienne’ premieres at Alkmene Theatre starting April 27 for a limited run.
