The mayor of Paris, Anne Idalgo will not be nominated for third term

Finally in the discussions for another nomination is his mayor , who will not claim a new term. Paris mayor Ann Idalgo, whose city welcomed the Olympics and Paralympics this summer, will not be nominated in 2026 for a third term, announced in an interview with the Le Monde newspaper published today. “I won’t be nominated for a third term. It’s a decision I’ve made for a long time,” says the Socialist mayor, who has been in the reins of the capital since 2014, putting an end to discussions about her candidacy for months. “I have always believed that two terms are enough to carry out profound changes,” adds the 65-year-old outgoing mayor, whose second term was marked by the success of the Olympic Games held in the heart of the city. Ann Idalgo failed however loudly in her presidential nomination in 2022 (she took 1.7% of the vote) and in her recent decision to limit the maximum speed to 50 km/h in the Paris district, one of France’s busiest roads, which caused a blow to right-wing MPs, as well as the government. Less than a year and a half before the municipal elections, Ann Idalgo assures that she will be “Mayor until the last day, with the same energy” she had when she arrived at the City Hall of Paris, where in March 2014 she succeeded the socialist Bertrand Delanoe and became the first woman head of the capital. Idalgo says she wanted to announce her decision “pretty early” from “respect” to the Parisians and to prepare “a calm transition”, which will be undertaken by one of her faithful, the socialist Senator Remi Fero, for whom she wishes to succeed it. Her former deputy, Emanuel Gregoire, who became an MP and their relations have cooled down, said a candidate last week with the support of 450 Socialist Party officials. Asked about her future plans, Ann Idalgo explains to Le Monde that she is “not going to be a candidate” in the next presidential election. In late October, the weekly Canard Enchaîné magazine had written that it is in contact with former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg to be put in charge of his foundation in Brussels.
