The lack of solidarity constructs new walls and dead ends

Nikos Androulakis
The Geneva convention on refugees constitutes one of the major achievements of the international fair. The need for the training came absolutely after two…
world wars, in which the protection of refugees was clearly in deficit, with millions of refugees have been displaced forcibly.
Mutatis mutandis, the temporary agreement reached in Brussels last Friday between E.E. and Turkey can have similar tragic results. The movement of people, against their will, is not an easy process. Because someone has to pay 1,000 euros to travel from the Turkish coast to Greece wants to return voluntarily? Especially if she’s a refugee and is in imminent danger in their country of origin. The leaders of the E.E. you should be prepared for the extremely ugly and violent images, and these are very likely to include refugees, not only irregular migrants that can be deported.
In addition, there are serious ethical and legal gaps in the agreement on Monday. International law is clear: all applications must be considered separately and the asylum seeker should not be returned to a country that does not offer adequate protection. Sure the Turkey does not fulfil these conditions, and is a full member of the Geneva Convention, while offering a lesser protection regime and only to Syrian citizens. Amnesty International described the proposed agreement “coup de grâce” for the right of asylum, while Filippo Grandi, the High Commissioner expressed “deep concern”. It is almost certain that the design returns, as outlined at this time, will be forfeited after an appeal to the European Courts.
Unfortunately, we have now settled into a dead end and the reason is that many european countries have a peculiar understanding of the concept of solidarity. By refusing to implement the joint decisions on open internal borders, but also without accept to accommodate refugees in their territory, they remind us of aspects of european History that we thought we had left behind us. At the same time, of course, the moment they do not implement joint decisions, require πρόσβαρη the structural funds. It’s sad but at the same time, and ironic that the vast majority of these are countries which “export” of refugees in earlier times. The hospitality shown by third countries to their citizens the refuse today to the Syrian refugees. This behavior is a disgrace for Europe and our common values.
Share in the responsibility has and Germany. No one can blame Germany for lack of solidarity at the beginning of the refugee crisis. However, this does not mean that the diplomatic handling of it was always right. From the beginning of the refugee crisis, Germany is systematically overlooks the fact that mr Erdogan is not part of the solution but of the problem. Turkey has responsibilities for the situation in which it finds itself today in Syria and the refugee flows to Europe. Here, Germany is repeating a mistake that has been done in the past. Behave fear to mr Erdogan, giving him an incentive to ask for more and more. The result is that Turkey, taking advantage of the need of Europeans being shaken down for benefits not only to the refugee but also in the context of broader geopolitical designs, such as the integration of the process and the developments in the Middle East region.
The truth is that the refugee will not be solved if not an end to the war in Syria. Up to come but this day, the leaders of the E.E. to respect common rules and common values. Otherwise, historians of the future will be very critical with them.
And this is despite the repeated retractions of the Greek government: the delay of the creation of hot spots, from the filibuster to the activation of the community mechanism for civil protection in emergency activities, from the negative attitude of the development of Frontex in the acceptance of the strategy Erdogan for a joint patrol of NATO and from the condemnation of closed borders in the signature for the finish of a “wave through”.
The only consolation that I can make a note of it, as I mentioned in my speech in the European Parliament, is that the Greek people, living in a difficult economic situation with very high rates of unemployment, proves overwhelmingly that solidarity is not “a la carte” and is not useful only when you accept it, but above all it is liberating when you give it to him.
