On August 12, 2020, a significant maritime incident occurred near the island of Kastellorizo when the Greek frigate ‘Lemnos’ was involved in a confrontation with Turkey’s frigate ‘Kemal Reis,’ which was escorting the seismic research vessel ‘Oruc Reis.’ This event, now five years in the past, remains a defining moment in Greek naval history. The so-called ‘bumping’ maneuver executed by the Turkish ship caused serious damage to its own hull while showcasing the professionalism, alertness, and tactical discipline of the Hellenic Navy officers and crew aboard the ‘Lemnos.’
The incident took place approximately 100 nautical miles south of Kastellorizo, within the broader zone where the Turkish research ship Oruc Reis was operating under naval protection. Tasked with monitoring the Turkish vessel and safeguarding Greece’s national interests, the Lemnos remained steadfast as the Kemal Reis attempted an aggressive and reckless maneuver—cutting across the bow at a 90-degree angle in an effort to intimidate and force the Greek frigate away.
Despite the provocative move, the Lemnos maintained its course and speed. Under the calm and decisive command of Captain Giannis Saliaris, the frigate avoided a catastrophic collision by reversing engines at the critical moment. As a result, the Kemal Reis sustained a three-meter-long gash near its helicopter hangar, while the Lemnos suffered only minor damage to its bow.
Saliaris’ actions were widely praised for preventing what could have escalated into a major naval disaster, potentially involving fire or even sinking. His response reflected not only personal composure but also the high level of training and readiness maintained by the Hellenic Navy. Days after the incident, then-Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos personally commended him, though Saliaris humbly stated he had simply done his duty.
The incident also highlighted the operational excellence of the Hellenic Navy’s leadership, including Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff Admiral Stylianos Petrakis and Fleet Commander Panagiotis Lympertos. Their swift crisis management, coordination with political leadership, and maintenance of operational readiness demonstrated the Navy’s capability to handle complex challenges.
Following the event, Greece reinforced its strategic position through increased cooperation with allies, including joint exercises with French naval assets and the deployment of Rafale fighter jets to Crete. These moves sent a clear message of deterrence to Turkey while reinforcing regional security.
