In the present study attempts a contribution in the search for the development potential of the domestic production, through the examination of an undervalued sector of the Greek economy, the primary sector, but also of the wider αγροτροφικού system. Central axis of work is the assumption that the current conditions for growth are weaker than in the recent past. This is due to the impact it had on the Greek economy on the one hand, the increasing internationalisation and liberalisation of international trade and, on the other hand, the influence of the unilateral austerity policies imposed by the international creditors in the country, which had a negative impact on the already existing serious structural problems of the Greek economy.
It is estimated that the dramatic decline and obsolescence of domestic production base in the period 2010-2014 will make it more difficult for a long time the growth prospects, both because of the dislocation of the domestic sectoral linkages as well as undermining the potential for integration in the international division of labour with favourable conditions (loss of position in the domestic and international market, decline in investment, depreciation of capital equipment, migration of graduates and skilled human resources etc.).
The objective of the study is the investigation of the possibilities and the specific conditions that need to be created, so that the agro-food system can play the role that corresponds, firstly, to stabilise and subsequently to restart the development process in the Greek economy.
The analysis of the issue takes into account both the parameters set by the european and the wider global environment as well as the results of the strategic development options of the last few decades, and especially the options of economic policy from 2010. The time horizon of the proposals of the study attempted to have a relative balance between addressing current problems, the medium-term perspective and the outline of a long-term alternative strategy.
