The fruit is the treatment for kidney stones

Researchers in the united states – including a Greek – propose a new, more effective treatment for stones in…
kidneys, as they are now indications that the hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which is contained in fruit, can dissolve these stones.
If this is verified in large clinical trials, then this would be the first substantial progress in the preventive treatment of kidney stones for 30 years. These stones are small hard crystals of calcium oxalate, which gradually accumulate in the kidneys.
Approximately 12% of men and 7% of women experience these stones. Hypertension, diabetes, and obesity increase the risk, while the relevant facts show an increase in the last few years.
Preventive treatment of nephrolithiasis has not changed particularly during the last three decades. Doctors recommend to patients who are at risk to drink a lot of water and avoid foods rich in oxalates, such as spinach, okra, almonds, rhubarb etc. Also suggest taking citrate of potassium, which can slow down the formation of stones, but in some people causes side effects.
The researchers, led by associate professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Houston Jeffrey Rhymer, who made the relevant publication in the journal “Nature”, studied the effect of hydroxycitric acid found that can dissolve the calcium oxalate crystals.
As mentioned -after a comparative study of the two substances in the laboratory and in seven people – the hydroxycitric acid (HCA) should now be preferred against the citrate of potassium, because it is more effective. Will follow clinical trials to test the safety of the HCA over time and to determine the appropriate dosage.
In the investigation participated the John Μπουρμπάκης, since 2013 assistant professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Pittsburgh. He graduated from the Chemistry Department of the University of Crete in 2001, from where he obtained his phd in 2006, to continue his career in the united states.
