In Italy, they are usually eaten generously sprinkled with icing sugar or with custard cream and sweet cherry.
The ones sprinkled with the icing are smooth and round, while the ones with the cream are fried through a cornet, and have a similar shape to their garnish.
Only to try them, we have to ask for a portion of steamed zeppoles, because if we ask for donuts, probably no one will understand us.
They are a traditional sweet of the day celebrated by St. Joseph, the patron saint of Italy. This tradition is said to have begun in the 19th century in Naples. Now, however, they are consumed daily, without any festive occasion.
Enjoy them !!
