The decisions of the European Parliament on terrorism

“Today’s decision of the European Parliament is a milestone for dealing with terrorism,” said the European Commissioner for Migration, D. Avramopoulos, after the…
adoption by the European Parliament on the two proposals of the Commission, firstly, Directive on the fight against terrorism and, secondly, the strengthening of controls at the external borders of Schengen. “The Council must now proceed to the quick adoption of these proposals, and the Member States to implement them,” he added.
With the new Directive on the fight against terrorism, the police and prosecuting authorities throughout the EU will have the possibility to give a joint response to the threat of terrorism that is constantly evolving. This will be done with full respect of fundamental rights, stated mr. Avramopoulos, and the Commissioner for Security, Julian King.
The EU legal framework will be strengthened, ensuring the criminalization of all member states of the offences associated with terrorism, such as travel to, from and within the EU which are for the purpose of making of a terrorist attack, the training of terrorists and their funding. This is particularly important in a period where there is risk of returning foreign terrorist-fighters in Europe from war zones. With this proposal, the EU is strengthening the support and protection to the victims of terrorism wherever they are in Europe, directly and for as long as is necessary.
Today’s positive vote of the EC to strengthen controls at our external borders through the modification of the Borders Code of Schengen, in conjunction with the operation of the European border guard and coast Guard demonstrate our joint commitment to strengthening the management of our external borders and our effectiveness in terms of the measures agreed in the road map of Bratislava, they added the two Commissioners.
At the same time, it is stressed that the compromise reached with the co-legislators ensures a good balance between the security challenges and the need to ensure that you will avoid a disproportionate impact on cross-border transits.
When the Commission submitted these proposals in December 2015, he asked the Parliament and the Council to deal with as urgent. The adoption of concrete proposals by the European Parliament shows that the EU implements with speed and determination the commitments for strengthening the internal security of the EU, paving the way for an effective Union Security. “We look forward to the immediate adoption of these proposals by the Council and the full implementation in the member states”, reached by the two Commissioners.
