Land, increasing the photosynthesis and growth of trees and other plants after the industrial revolution, according to a new international scientific research.
Scientists estimate that if the green leaves were added due to the increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, spread on the surface of our planet, covering an area twice that of the USA. Pointed out, however, that the positive side of the carbon probably be reduced with the passage of time and is offset by the negative impact on the climate (temperature rise and level seas, melting ice caps, acidifying oceans, more extreme weather events etc.).
The 32 researchers from eight countries, led by professor Î¡Î¬Î½Î³ÎºÎ± ÎœÎ¹Î½ÎÎ½Î¹ of the Department of Geosciences and Environment, Boston University, made the relevant publication in the leading magazine on issues of climate change, “Nature Climate Change”, according to the BBC.
The study, which was based on analysis of data 33 years from american satellites, as well as in the study models through computer, shows a diachronic increase in the range of 25% to 50% in the green of the Earth. This development slows down climate change, as well as the more plants absorb more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Only 4% of the planet shows a loss of green space over the last few decades.
It is estimated that the carbon dioxide is by far the most important factor (70%) for the faster growth of plants on Earth and it follows in importance (9%) the increase in the level of nitrogen.
The argument that the increased carbon dioxide grow the planet has been used in the past by the skeptics of climate change. The new study, which shows that the positive effect of the carbon in the plants is greater than what had been estimated up to now, is expected to give a new food in their arguments.
