A new reimagining of the iconic horror film The Blair Witch Project is set to haunt cinemas this fall—specifically on September 24, 2027. Lionsgate, the studio behind the original 1999 phenomenon, announced the reboot via a moody black-and-white teaser video posted across its social media channels.
A Fresh Take for a New Generation
While plot details remain under wraps, Adam Fogelson, President of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, previously described the project as ‘a new take’ designed to reintroduce the groundbreaking found-footage classic to a fresh generation of viewers.
Behind the Camera
YouTube-born filmmaker Dylan Clark will direct the film, working from a screenplay by Chris Thomas Devlin. Executive producers include the original creators—Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale—as well as original cast members Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams. Also attached are Michael Clear, Janson Scott, and Steven Schneider.
Production is led by James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, alongside Roy Lee, Adam Hendricks, and Gregg Fienberg.
Legacy of a Landmark Film
Released in 1999 on an ultra-low budget, The Blair Witch Project became one of the most commercially successful independent films of all time—grossing nearly $250 million worldwide. Its innovative use of the ‘found footage’ technique told the chilling, faux-documentary story of three film students who vanish while investigating local folklore about the Blair Witch in Maryland’s Black Hills Forest.
The franchise later expanded with the 2000 sequel Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, which failed to replicate the original’s impact, followed by the 2016 reboot directed by Adam Wingard—a film that also fell short of expectations.
