A child with attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity is trying hard to concentrate in school, to stay…
organized and playing with συνεργασιμότητα, which is not easy. This is why it is important for children with ADHD to participate in activities that are fun and in which they succeed. But, before you write your child for lessons in music or martial arts, there are a few things we recommend to do first.
How to find the best activity for children with ADHD
Be flexible on that. Every child with ADHD is unique. Something that works well for one child may not suit another. Keep this in mind and be flexible as your child explores new activities.
Maintain a routine. Children with ADHD benefit from the routine. Find activities in which your child can easily put a priority on what he has to do every day. If your child is having difficulty with school activities during the week and the schedule is loaded, try to put the activity on the weekend or a day in the week where he turns early from school. This way your child can pass in the activity without being stressed when doing homework, or other obligations of everyday life.
Find activities with limited distractions.
Children with ADHD sometimes find it difficult to complete an activity if there are a lot of things that they break the attention. If it is a group activity, select one with few children. A child who is easily distracted deal equally easily with other behaviors associated with ADHD. For example, activities that require absolute concentration, it is difficult for a child with ADHD, so if your child wants to participate in a chess club after school would be better to find a group with a few kids. The fewer the children the more they can concentrate and remain concentrated and to be given individual support by the responsible adult of the group.
Stay steady on the objectives.
To combine school obligations and extracurricular activities for your child it is a challenge for this, so try not to overload the schedule. Start with little things: if your child manages to go in English 2 times a week and to be consistent in all the school obligations, maybe you can put a sport activity outside school hours also.
Find activities that will develop their self-esteem.
Children with ADHD often struggle to do well inside and outside of school. This is why it is important to find activities that enhance self-esteem. If your child has already shown an interest in sports, art or music you can search for a department or activity corresponding.
