Greece stands unwaveringly by Cyprus’ side, said Thanos Plyris, Greece’s Minister of Migration and Asylum, speaking ahead of the EU Council of Ministers for Justice and Home Affairs in Brussels.

Unusual Circumstances Amid Regional Tensions

The minister noted that today’s meeting — held on 5 March 2026 — takes place under unusual circumstances, shaped by the ongoing crisis in Iran and its potential impact on population movements across the region.

Clear Support for Nicosia

Plyris reaffirmed Athens’ unequivocal political support for Nicosia, underscoring longstanding bilateral solidarity between Greece and Cyprus.

Strengthening Returns as a Priority

Among the key agenda items discussed was the reinforcement of return policies. Plyris stressed that curbing irregular migration requires increasing the number of returns and sending a clear message: Europe is not a destination for those who do not qualify for international protection.

He recalled Greece’s active role in implementing the EU’s new Pact on Migration and Asylum, highlighting that its effective operation hinges on the forthcoming Return Regulation — which includes establishing ‘return hubs’. These dedicated facilities are a top priority for Greece.

“To combat irregular migration, we must increase returns and send a clear message: Europe is not an attractive destination for those who do not qualify for asylum. We are very close to implementing the Pact — all member states are preparing accordingly. But smooth implementation depends critically on the Return Regulation, which sets out the framework for return hubs — a key priority for Greece.”
