Thai authorities have charged 45-year-old Australian Seymour Peter Carmean with premeditated murder after the body of a 17-year-old girl was discovered inside a suitcase. The arrest took place late Friday, June 26, 2026, at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, where Carmean was reportedly preparing to board a flight to Australia.
Investigation and Charges
A friend of the victim had previously reported her missing to police. According to Deputy Police Lieutenant Colonel Kosala Ngampong, speaking to the French news agency AFP, Carmean is also facing charges of child abduction and concealing a corpse.
Carmean was initially detained in Pattaya — a coastal resort town in eastern Thailand known for its sex tourism — and denies all allegations. He now faces penalties ranging from life imprisonment to the death penalty under Thai law.
Surveillance Footage and Timeline
Security camera footage reviewed by police shows Carmean entering a residence in Pattaya early Thursday morning with the teenager, then leaving later that same evening carrying a large black suitcase. Investigators believe he transported the suitcase on a motorcycle near a railway line, where the girl’s body was found early Saturday.
The teen’s remains showed visible signs of trauma. She had left her home in Kalasin Province — located in northeastern Thailand — on June 16. Her family traveled to Bangkok on Monday, June 29, to collect her body.
“I never imagined she’d leave us so soon,” said Orante Busarakam, the teen’s stepmother, speaking by phone with AFP. “I’m completely shattered.”
Safety Concerns in Pattaya
This case has reignited concerns about safety in Pattaya, raising alarms among locals and international observers alike. The resort city has long drawn scrutiny over its links to exploitative tourism practices, including sex tourism.
