TERMINATION αναγνώστριας: Unacceptable event in voluntary blood donation – “they Refused to take my blood because I’m…”

Dear tromaktiko, listening for the lack of blood we have in our country… the call clubs for blood and the low rates of voluntary blood donors that we have as a country in the world, I decided 8 years ago to be a blood donor, an active member in voluntary organizations, to talk, to inform, to raise awareness of those around me, believing that I will change the world’!
I had to spend 8 years to figure out why most of us give blood only to acquaintances/ relatives who need it and only when requested. Others, again, give only in hospitals, blood bank, thus gathering bottles for ‘hour of need’.
How selfish, huh??
And yet, not at all!!! I told you, it’s been 8 years to figure it out!
The incident:
On 19/02, I decided to attend the voluntary blood donation “Blood-e” in the “house of Arts and Letters, the Onassis Foundation”.
(At this point to emphasize is that no one ‘invited’. For this donation I searched and I learned completely on my own!)
I informed a friend to me, so that to introduce a voluntary donation, as it were to give for the 1st time of blood.
Being 8 years as a volunteer blood donor, organ donor and bone marrow, and 4 years (in the past) organising events for voluntary blood donation in cooperation with various associations and hospitals, you know that I know quite well what the process is respected.
So, after I filled out the necessary paperwork given to me, the time has come for the medical check, which by the way never happened.
After I sat in the chair of the physician, the 1st question was:
– “How much do you weigh?”
(I’m tired of hearing this! I’m thin ever since I can remember myself! I must point out that I do the necessary medical examinations systematically, and I have absolutely no health problem!)
Beside him sat the responsible physician (as he introduced himself to me) and before I could answer the doctor, he addressed me therefore:
– “You can’t give blood!”
I smile (as it is logical to not know my background) and make the card a blood donor (I remind you that I have a number of registry blood donor for 8 years).
The doctor proceeded to ignore it, while the doctor who has taken control over me, takes the card, opens it and checking seals and names of doctors. Then, he tells me:
– “Oh, you’re giving 8 years of blood! Always the same pounds you were?”
And I answer directly:
– “Yes!”
Then the doctor says:
– “Show her the law, can not give blood!”
At that moment, I smile again and ask to speak with the manager. She tells me that she is the responsible, but, nevertheless, never accepted to talk to me!
I thought it was unacceptable from the side, not to observe even the procedure that you follow (medical control, pressure measurement, hematocrit, etc.) since I’m a blood donor all these years, to ignore it ostentatiously and to kick me out!
At this point to mention that they do the same to my friend, finding another excuse to say. In the same way they left and some other people after us.
None of them, however, did not speak, did not react, I asked: “Why?”.
Nevertheless, I understand that not everyone is able to become blood donors. And I accept that totally!
But, in any case, I don’t accept the unacceptable behaviour of the doctor! And I wonder… so just deal with blood donors??
Finally, I would like to add that as I was leaving, someone from the organization (after she had seen the scene and heard the conversation), came to me and said:
– “Hello, I’m the “so-and-So” of the organization, and I want to apologize to you on behalf of the doctors”!
I responded that I don’t need to ask my he sorry and that it is a shame these things happen from the moment there is a shortage of blood in our country. He nod his head and immediately added:
– “When it has good traffic, is what they all do”.
Wait a minute… What does this do”?? They blood donors?
In closing, I would like to mention that I have already contacted the relevant services in order to solve some questions…
– Who defines the responsible physicians who attend the voluntary blood donations?
I have a right to know!
– Who has put them to judge when it’s satisfying the blood draw and when not to?
Why attend against their will? Who requires them?
Y.C.: The reason I am addressing you is because I can’t in any case have dropped my guard with the fact that: while there are people who fight to stop the culture of irresponsibility and prejudice towards voluntary blood donation… there are some others where the sustain in the worst way!!!
It’s a shame to become so great efforts, so that the blood donations to attract people, and there are some that are destroying the world.
Thank you very much for your time, and I hope in the future to stop such incidents.
