Taxi: They sound “baths” from today – Fine 1,000 euros for those who do not have a sticker for payment with POS

The period of warnings passed and from today (18.11.2024) they start to drop fines for those drivers who have not placed the sign for payment with . The reason for the special sticker which each taxi driver must stick to the rear right glass of his vehicle, so that passengers are aware that they have the possibility, if they wish, to pay with POS. The dialogue on the objections of taxi drivers’ associations has come to an end, as the mandatoryness of the measure starts from today with the controls started. Already, throughout the previous period, the auditors of the AADE have plowed the streets of taxis, roads, squares, the airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” and the ports, however, remaining in the recommendations to those who had not proceeded to place the sticker. From now on the grace period ends, and those drivers who have not been motivated by extensive controls so as to comply with the measure will be faced with a heavy fine, amounting to EUR 1,000. The results of the checks estimate that taxi drivers who have placed the special sticker are about 50% of the total. In fact, the checks of the ADE are not just continuing but will be intensified nationwide so that the occurrences of non-compliance with the measure can be addressed. “Thesaurus” tax evasion in taxis Characteristic is the rise of reported revenue in taxis since the POS began to be widely used, as within October the finance ministry announced evidence showing a well hidden “thesaurus” tax evasion now coming to the surface. This is because taxi receipts through POS show an increase of 177% over the previous year. According to the Ministry’s data, the turnover of taxis via POS was in 2023 a total of 26m euros, while in January – August it was 18m euros. In 2024, following the cash interconnection with POS, taxis had a turnover of 50m euros in the eight months, while a total of 73m euros is estimated for the year.
