Taliban Release American Hostage Held in Afghanistan

The Taliban released an American hostage today (March 29, 2025), as announced by former Washington envoy to Kabul, Zalmay Khalilzad. The American had been captured earlier this year in Afghanistan alongside two British nationals and their Afghan interpreter. “The American citizen, Phoebe Hall, who was just released by the Taliban, is now under the protection of our allies in Qatar in Kabul and will soon be on her way home,” stated officials. This marks the third instance of an American citizen being released by the Taliban since Donald Trump assumed presidency in January. On March 20, 2025, the Taliban also freed George Glezman, a 66-year-old American who had been detained in Kabul for two years. His release followed negotiations between U.S. officials and the Taliban during a visit to Kabul, the first such visit since the Taliban regained power in 2021.
