A 42-year-old EKAB rescuer—murdered on Thursday, 23 July—knew both the 41-year-old man and his 30-year-old partner, her ex-husband told newsit.gr. All three grew up on Syros, a small Cycladic island where personal connections run deep. Speaking amid mounting anguish over their two minor children, he emphasized that familiarity was inevitable in such a tight-knit community.
Shared Roots and Family Ties
“In a small place like Syros, most people know each other, at least by sight or through shared history,” he explained. “I knew both the 41-year-old and his partner—and so did she. We all grew up in the same town; it was only natural we’d cross paths.”
He added that family links further intertwined the two households: “The 41-year-old’s former wife had married the 42-year-old’s first cousin, meaning their children spent time together with ours.”
No Financial Conflict, Says Ex-Husband
Addressing early speculation about property or rental disputes, he categorically denied any such tension: “To my knowledge, there was no disagreement between them—no property disputes, no outstanding financial matters. Claims about rent or other assets simply don’t reflect reality.”
He also cast doubt on unconfirmed reports circulating about the method of attack: “I can’t verify any of the scenarios being discussed—nothing about a ‘lost’ weapon, and the air rifle theory is false. The only confirmed detail I’ve heard is that security cameras are installed at the scene, which may help authorities clarify what happened.”
Immediate Response to the Crime
Upon learning of the killing, he went directly to the police: “I reported to the station right away—not only to register my presence but to find out exactly what had occurred. Until then, no one had contacted me—not the police, not her family—even though I’m the father of two minors who needed answers.”
He gave a formal statement, but investigators were unable to share further details at that stage: “I asked if they could tell me more, but they said it was too early to provide updates.”
Focus on the Children
The rescuer and her ex-husband had two children: a 14-year-old son and a daughter turning 12 the day after the murder. Her ex-husband described his overwhelming concern: “My daughter learned what happened before her birthday—and my son, who is 14, already knows too.
