The party’s Political Secretariat meeting went beyond routine organisational matters, yielding concrete decisions that intertwine political counter-offensives, structural reorganisation, and preparations for all possible electoral scenarios.
Novartis Back at the Forefront
The most prominent decision is the renewed focus on the Novartis case—a pharmaceutical bribery scandal involving alleged payments to Greek politicians and officials to influence drug pricing and procurement policies. SYRIZA leadership argues that recent public revelations by former New Democracy MP Marios Salmas have created new factual ground, reopening a file it claims was prematurely closed amid serious unanswered questions.
Within hours of the Political Secretariat’s session, SYRIZA moved from declarations to action. In a press release, its Press Office announced it had tasked its Transparency Sector—led by Pavlos Polakis—and authorised lawyer Yiannis Apatsidis with initiating a series of immediate legal and institutional steps.
These include formal requests to:
- The Prosecutor’s Office for the re-examination of cases involving former ministers Adonis Georgiadis and Dimitris Avramopoulos;
- The Hellenic Authority for Communication Security and Privacy (ADAE) to publish its findings regarding unclarified payments linked to the Minister of Health;
- The Supreme Court (Areios Pagos) for a comprehensive review of all Novartis-related judicial files.
Additionally, SYRIZA is pursuing claims for financial compensation from Novartis for damages incurred by the Greek state—and raising concerns about potential disciplinary oversight of judicial and prosecutorial officials involved in the handling of the case.
