SYRIZA Political Secretariat Meets Amid Resignations and Tsipras Crisis

The SYRIZA Political Secretariat is set to hold a highly charged meeting at the party’s headquarters on Koumoundourou Street, as senior party figures grapple with what is widely seen as the most serious internal crisis in recent months. Shortly after noon on Friday, 10 July 2026, key figures including Pavlos Polakis, Nikos Pappas, and Rena Dourou arrived at the central offices — reaffirming their insistence that Saturday’s Central Committee session must proceed as scheduled, despite the political turbulence triggered by Sokratis Famellos’ resignation from the party presidency.

A Crisis Beyond Succession

With resignations unfolding in rapid succession and the Political Secretariat meeting unfolding under the shadow of deepening internal discord, Koumoundourou Street once again finds itself at the centre of delicate political balancing acts. The core rift, however, goes far beyond procedural questions — such as whether or when the Central Committee should convene, or how to manage Famellos’ succession. At its heart lies SYRIZA’s stance toward former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the potential for electoral cooperation with the newly formed Greek Left Coalition (ELAS). This issue has become the focal point of internal division: different factions within the party view both Tsipras’ political return and the prospect of redefining SYRIZA’s relationship with ELAS in fundamentally opposing ways.

Polakis Sets the Tone

The tone for today’s meeting was set early in the day by Pavlos Polakis, who posted a public call urging members of the Political Secretariat — and broader party cadres — to gather at Koumoundourou. “No one will postpone Saturday’s Central Committee meeting on 11/7,” he wrote, urging all to attend and “affirm a new course for SYRIZA — one that moves beyond the devalued image the party has projected recently.” His intervention reflects the heightened stakes: the Central Committee session has now evolved into a pivotal moment for internal power dynamics and the party’s immediate strategic direction.

Deputy Secretary Anastasia Sapouna was among the first to arrive at the party offices. A quorum for the Political Secretariat requires the presence of at least 17 of its 30 members — and according to reports from newsit.gr, that threshold has been met. Also present were Giorgos Panagiotopoulos, Yiannis Boulekos, and Panos Lambrinidis, Secretary of SYRIZA Youth.

Domino Resignations After Famellos

Famellos’ resignation acted as a catalyst, setting off a chain reaction inside the party. Hours after stepping down as party president, Dionysis Kalamatiannos submitted his resignation from his post as Secretary of SYRIZA’s Parliamentary Group. In his letter to group members, he described the decision as the result of careful reflection — signalling his distancing from the party’s latest developments.
