SYRIZA MP Giorgos Psychogiou Resigns

SYRIZA Parliamentary Group Loses Another MP: Giorgos Psychogiou Resigns

—

in

Greek MP for Corinthia Giorgos Psychogiou has formally withdrawn from SYRIZA’s parliamentary group, submitting a resignation letter to Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament Nikitas Kaklamanis. His departure marks the third such exit within a single day — part of a wave of resignations following recent internal party restructurings.

A Day of Departures

Earlier on the same day, MPs Giorgos Gavrilos (Argolis) and Andreas Panagiotopoulos (Achaea) also announced their withdrawal from SYRIZA’s parliamentary group. Psychogiou’s letter, filed with Parliament on 14 July 2026, cites Paragraph 5 of Article 16 of the Parliament’s Standing Orders — the legal provision allowing MPs to leave their parliamentary group while retaining their seat.

‘With this letter, I hereby notify you that, pursuant to Paragraph 5 of Article 16 of the Parliament’s Standing Orders, I am withdrawing from the SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance parliamentary group. Henceforth, I will carry out my parliamentary duties as an independent MP for Corinthia,’ Psychogiou wrote in his official statement.

Deepening Crisis

Psychogiou’s move intensifies the ongoing crisis within SYRIZA’s parliamentary group, which is facing mounting defections from both MPs and party officials in the wake of recent internal developments. According to reports, further resignations may follow in the coming hours or days — a scenario expected to shift parliamentary dynamics and realign voting blocs in the Hellenic Parliament.
