SYRIZA in Turmoil Over Pre-Investigation Proposal for OPEKEPE – Potential Blame on PM and Disagreement Between Famenlos and Farantouris

in

Despite lacking the required signatures to formally submit a proposal for a pre-investigation committee regarding the OPEKEPE scandal, SYRIZA is considering making its list of politically responsible individuals public. Within the party, there remains no consensus on whether to implicate Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Deputy Parliament Speaker Olga Gerovasili stated that current evidence does not point to the PM’s direct involvement but left room for future developments during the investigation, saying, “Our strategy will be shaped according to what emerges regarding the prime minister’s role.”

When asked about the possibility of gathering enough support, Gerovasili noted that SYRIZA could potentially collaborate with New Left and independent MPs to advance the initiative. However, internal reports suggest that the New Left favors an investigative committee instead of a pre-investigation, based on legal advice and a desire to keep the issue in the public spotlight as long as possible—potentially until September and the Thessaloniki International Fair.

Meanwhile, SYRIZA’s leadership has criticized the speed at which the decision was made, arguing it left little room for coordination. Party spokesperson Sokratis Famellos described the OPEKEPE affair as “a massive scandal directly tied to the Mitsotakis government,” and warned that more revelations are yet to come. He accused the prime minister of attempting to diffuse responsibility, noting sarcastically, “Whom exactly is he referring to when only ‘blue’ figures are implicated?”

Tensions have also emerged within SYRIZA over differing views between Famellos and Euro-MP Nikos Farantouris. While Famellos insists on a pre-investigation followed by government resignation and elections, Farantouris proposed forming a special-purpose government focused on cleansing political corruption. According to sources, Famellos personally called Farantouris to clarify that his position deviates from the official party line, which remains: pre-investigation, resignation, and elections.

Despite this, Farantouris doubled down on his stance through a follow-up social media post, escalating internal discord and raising questions about unity within SYRIZA ahead of critical political developments.
