In a sharp response to SYRIZA Member of the European Parliament Nikolaos Farantouris, the party’s headquarters has made it clear that his suggestion of forming a special-purpose government with broad consensus does not reflect the official stance of the party. Farantouris had proposed such a government aimed at institutional cleansing and restoring public trust, both domestically and internationally.
The party reiterated its firm position: “The only viable solution is the resignation of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ government and new elections.” This statement aligns with previous declarations by SYRIZA President Sokratis Famellos and the party’s parliamentary leadership, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and democratic integrity.
Farantouris, speaking on MEGA earlier, argued that Greece needs an administration focused on reforming institutions, cooperating with European audit bodies, and enhancing transparency. He cited several scandals, including the OPEKEPE affair, which he said have undermined Greece’s credibility in international forums and weakened citizens’ confidence in the state.
He also highlighted contradictions between Greece’s efforts in the European Parliament and recent corruption revelations, stressing that such issues threaten national interests and hinder diplomatic progress, particularly concerning regional security and defense cooperation.
Despite these concerns, SYRIZA remains committed to demanding political change through democratic processes, insisting that any alternative proposal falls outside the party’s strategic vision.
