SYRIZA Criticizes Government Over Triantopoulos Email Scandal

In a relentless attack on Thursday (6.3.25), Socrates Famellos targeted the email revealed by the newspaper ‘Estia.’ The email, dated March 9, 2023, confirms that Triantopoulos participated in a meeting under George Gerapetritis at the Thessaly Region office, which he did not mention in Parliament. The email discusses the cleanup and restoration of disaster areas. According to the publication, Triantopoulos requested the region to assess costs and send them to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport for rapid processing as highlighted by the minister. SYRIZA argues that the government’s difficult position is evident from the comparison between the deaths in Mati and Tempi. They believe the image of the minister showing Mati photos highlights who politically exploits events and who disregards the truth. Notably, SYRIZA criticized government officials for bringing up Alexis Tsipras’ involvement in the Mati fire while serving as prime minister. In sharp contrast, SYRIZA’s president questioned Minister Skertzos about awareness of the alleged cover-up via email, emphasizing the need for transparency. The party demanded that Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Gerapetritis, and Skertzos testify before the Preliminary Committee. Further, they asked if emails and phone records would be voluntarily handed over to investigators. The investigation aims to uncover whether any governmental official was involved and what orders were given. SYRIZA criticized Triantopoulos for claiming responsibility for the area’s restoration on behalf of the prime minister, especially after his previous denials. Alexi Haritisis from New Left condemned the Prime Minister’s lack of remorse for the 57 victims and their families, accusing the government of arrogance and stating that Greece belongs to its 11 million citizens, not the ruling party.
